A media centre or a laptop to store and watch movies on the T.V.?
I am not sure what the difference is between a media player or a laptop computer to store and watch movies on the T.V.? Is it the conveneince of a media player or is there a technical advantage beside memory and storage space options?
I am currently looking at a Sony SMP-N100 that streams, stores and plays movie, music and pictures aswell as internet options. Is it a waste of money to buy this when I have a spare laptop? I'M CONFUSED! Aaaaaaaah!
Thankyou so much
A network media player is like a an internet connected computer without its' own storage. You can view/hear (some)content from the internet or from your other internet connected devices such as computers or phones or from an attached external hard drive.
If your laptop is fairly modern(last four years), save your money. Nothing is more universally compatible with all the different media formats than a real computer hooked up to your TV. All you need is a wireless keyboard/mouse and an HDMI cable. If your laptop doesn't have HDMI, a VGA cable and stereo (male to male) 3.5mm cable for audio and your are set. Need more storage? Add an external hard drive. But you could be in business for as little as $30. Media players have problems with content providers blocking them, have format compatibility issues and are limited to the preset services it came with. No such problems with a PC, especially one that's paid for already.
The $50 Roku LT doesn't disappoint (Cnet - Crave )
(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET)
The $50 Roku LT showed up in the CNET office today, and it lives up to the
hype.
We were worried that Roku would have to cut some serious corners to hit the
$50 price point, but after some quality hands-on time with Roku's new budget
streaming-video box, it looks like a winner. It delivers everything that's
great about the Roku experience (Netflix, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, Pandora,
and now HBO Go) and it's just as responsive as the more expensive models.
There are hardware limitations (no Ethernet, USB port or microSD card slot),
but we think those are acceptable omissions if you're buying the Roku strictly
to stream content off the Web.
The Roku LT also doesn't support 1080p video like the step-up Roku 2 XD, but
HD streams from both Netflix and Amazon looked awfully good on our 58-inch
plasma. Unless you're really picky about image quality, you won't notice the
difference.
We'll be posting a full review soon, but so far we haven't found any reason
why this wouldn't be the best streaming-video box value out there.
