I want to install a DiMarzio DP100 (Super Distortion) but the one I ordered is F-spaced this time so, assuming the DiMarzio fits in the same route as the standard spaced Seymour Duncan JB was in, will I need a new pickguard and pickup ring to do this or will the Super Distortion fit? I have approximately 2mm of gap on either side of the JB right now (between the pickup ring and the edge of the pickup itself) but looking at the middle and neck pickups (stock 1978 Fender single coils) it looks like they're significantly wider...is this just an optical illusion due to the pickup ring at the bridge? I'd just like to know what I'm getting into here when I make the swap.

I did a bit of looking, did not find Dimarzio dimensions. Seymour Duncan trembuckers use bobbins that are a shade less than 1/10th of an inch wider. The coils are actually a hair skinnier in the narrower dimension. The mounting hole spacing looks to be identical. Unless the pick guard is a very tight fit I thing you should be OK. But again I'm comparing Duncan standards to Duncan Trembuckers. Trembuckers are somewhat taller so it depends on clearance UNDER the guard. The routing might have to be made deeper into the wood of the body. I had to have this done on an Ibanez when I put Duncan stack pickups in it.
I don't ever recall seeing separate listings in pick guards for standard and trembucker size humbuckers from any catalogs.
Talk to an experienced guitar tech about this though.
