Gigabit Converter Explained
A gigabit converter is a transceiver device commonly used with Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber channel. One gigabit Ethernet port can support a wide range of physical media, from copper to long-wave single-mode optical fiber, at distances of hundreds of kilometers, by offering a standard, hot swappable electrical interface. It both transmits and receives something and if one side that receives a physically different network connector to the other side which transmits, then the transceiver could be doing the job of a media converter.
At one time, media converters were usually used in local area networks (LANs) when there were a lot of varied cabling and network standards being used, both hardware and software. At the hardware layer, along with the different connectors used, there were different cable forms like coaxial and twisted pair cables. Nowadays, the older cable installations were replaced with fiber optic cabling for high-speed links. This is when the gigabit converter comes into play since there is a need to convert fiber optic to copper cabling when the fiber cable arrives at a LAN.
Although it is still possible to buy media converters to convert between different copper cable types, the majority of the products in the market today convert between fiber optic cabling and some form of copper cabling, often integrated into switches. We can see a lot more of this scenario up until fiber optic cabling becomes affordable, or copper cabling has the same bandwidth and distance capacity of fiber optics.
As opposed to fixed physical interface configurations, the appeal of the GBIC standard in networking equipment is its flexibility. An administrator can buy GBICs as needed, not in advance, where multiple different optical technologies are in use, and they can be the particular kind required for each link, whether it's a 1000base GBIC or a 1000Base lx. This lowers the cost of the base system and gives the administrator far more flexibility. On the other hand, buying a switch with that port type built in will probably be less expensive and take up less space per port if it is known that a switch will primarily have one port type, especially if that port type is copper.
There are a number of fiber optics suppliers offering media converters in a format to fit rack mounted modules as gigabit converters are more possible to be utilized in data center environments such as telecommunications installations. Because there are no standards for the interfaces used and it is unlikely that a media converter to suit one manufacturer's rack will fit that of another manufacturer, make sure you know exactly what gigabit converter you need in your network before buying a 1000base GBIC or a 1000Base lx, for example.
