The Basics of HDTV Speakers
Although most people that watch television appear happy with the inbuilt sound systems there is much to be said for a television that is linked to it's own dedicated sound system. If you will only be watching soaps on it you may not care so much, but anyone that watches films, DVD's, blu-ray and even gamers should consider it as an option. Most modern televisions come supplied with reasonable speakers (nicam stereo) but they cannot compare with a specialist surround sound system that you can buy. It can give sound a completely real life feel, which is available only in theater halls. Moreover the deep bass frequencies, which you hear from sub woofers, are practically from all sides as they are at the level or below human hearing levels. It is very difficult for our ears to actually pin-point the direction in which the sound is coming and that is why we can only sense that an earthquake seems to be all around us, rather from coming from a particular direction.
Though you are free to place the sub woofer anywhere in the room, you still have to consider the size of the room, the type of flooring it has, the furnishing fabrics and the construction of the wall to get optimum output from it. Typically, best placement for a sub-woofer is in the front of the room, just to the left or right of the main speakers. Second hand speakers are of course less expensive. There are many systems available and it will depend on your budget in the end but look out for a set of Canton movie CD-1 (now referred to as CD-101) which offer excellent value for money.

Does home cinema DVD player need to be on in order to receive sound from external sources (ps3,bravia)?
I want to know if home cinema can play audio from my tv or ps3 without the need for the player to be on (i want to use my ps3 as media player, don't care about the dvd player of the home cinema)
Well try it and see. You cant pass a signal thru components that are turned off unless thay have a "pass thru" mode.
